The Greenfield Union School District takes pride in supporting families that have been identified as migrant workers. The district has a little over 400 students that are identified as migrant students. Students are provided with supplemental educational opportunities. Families are offered support in helping their students achieve academically and supporting them in accessing a variety of services throughout the community.
The Greenfield Union School District's Migrant Extended Day Program provides instructional services to migrant students in grades TK - 8. Extended Day classes are provided by credentialed teachers. The focus of this program targets English Language Development, English Language Arts, Writing, Math, Social Emotional Development, and Cultural/Self Pride. Our district is composed of nine elementary schools and three middle schools; hence, the goal of the program is to provide Migrant Extended Day classes at all of our twelve schools. The Extended Day program provides two to four hours per week of supplemental instructional services throughout the school year.
In addition, migrant parents are provided with five parent nights per year that serve as an orientation to the Migrant Education Program (MEP) and as a resource to promote parent involvement and student achievement in English Language Development, English Language Arts, Writing, Math, Social Emotional Development, and Cultural/Self Pride. During parent meetings, migrant students have the opportunity to learn by participating in reading and art lessons with a focus on culture and self pride that is led by a certificated teacher.
Furthermore, the Migrant Education School Readiness Program (MESRP) is an outreach home or school site based individual or small group program; wherein, a certificated preschool teacher provides instructional lessons to migrant children who are in the three to five year old age range and not yet attending school. This helps prepare these children for success upon entering transitional kindergarten or kindergarten. This program also trains parents to be their child's first teacher by guiding them with lessons to continue to work with their child on a daily basis. Children who are not enrolled in a high-quality head-start or preschool program are give priority for service.
