Ollivier Middle School has been selected for the prestigious 2026 California Distinguished Schools Program, California’s school recognition program that recognizes exceptional schools that distinguish themselves on the basis of exemplary student outcomes.
The 2026 California Distinguished Schools recognition program aims to recognize exemplary instructional programs throughout California public schools, the largest public school system in the United States.
"I'm just so proud of the entire team," said Principal Sheila Johnson "from custodians to noon aides, Program Assistants to teachers, and office staff, our school community works together to empower our students to be the best versions of themselves. We believe that with effort, intentionality, accountability, and a sense of community, our students will demonstrate that they are true champions. Leading with PRIDE (Purpose, Respect, Integrity, Discipline, and Effort) our students and staff are leaving a legacy within the educational community."
This year’s award categories build on long-standing recognition of the following two categories, Exemplary High Achievers and Achievement Gap Closers. This means California Distinguished Schools are among the highest in the state in academic achievement for all students, which have also ensured that historically underserved student groups are maintaining or increasing academic progress. Ollivier Middle School is now considered a school that that is accelerating in academic progress for two or more groups that have been historically underserved, while also demonstrating achievement for all students that is above the state median and maintaining or increasing academic performance for all students.
"We've also been operating with the understanding that consistency looks like nothing is happening, until everything changes," said Johnson " our visual representation is the constant banging on a piñata. It's not that final blow that breaks it open, it's all of the small, seemingly invisible and impactful strikes along the way that lead to the desired result."
California Distinguished Schools will be recognized at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim on April 24, 2026.
Join us in congratulating Ollivier staff, students, and families on this exceptional achievement.
