What is the GREAT Residency? GREAT Program Informational Video Show Transcript okay welcome everybody thank you for coming to our great residency meeting and we're going to be describing with that program is and the qualifications for being in this program that help are special education teachers here and the Greenfield Union School District so again welcome and let's get started maybe my cycle got there so I what is a Residency program and this kind describes it District serving teacher education programs that pair of rigorous full-year classroom apprenticeship with most with post-baccalaureate level education content building on the medical residency model teacher preparation programs provide dance with both the underlying theory of effective teaching and a year-long in school residency and which they practice and hone their skills and knowledge alongside an Effective Teacher mentor and a high need classroom new teacher residents receive stipend as they learn to teach and commit to teaching in the district for three or more years Beyond The Residency so that is kind of a description of what we're going to be talking about today this is a program basically they need to cut student teaching but you would be a red in Greenfield Union School District into different classrooms throughout the school year and you would get paid a stipend while you do that and we'll talk more about that as we progressed first what is a Residency program it's a collaboration between greenfield Union School California State University Bakersfield and I'm the Greenfield side Renee Whitney Kate Herman is a CSUB sites I'm using my hands are you in regard to any questions that you would have it is a year-long a Bishop where you will learn from selected Mentor teachers and you'll take your credential classes with your core cohort and you get support coaching from a university supervisor and Mentor teacher here on Greenfield and our curriculum specialist and will complete your credential and your coursework all within one year okay so just as quickly introduce myself I'm Kate Herman and I'm the coordinator ought to see if you'd be side and also a faculty that teaches in the Pro I'm at the SUV and the program like like Renee already said is a structured support between CSUB in Greenfield you wearing take classes as part of a cohort so that means that basically everyone who is a resident in this specific residency will be in all of your classes there on site at Greenfield for the most part there's like one exception because that one is outside of the special ed department and so we can't have them go all the way to Greenfield to TJ but every other class is at Greenfield you get a stipend of $23,000 it's spread over 10 months and that's because you're you're in the classroom you're working 3 days a week you have a sub credential and then also you can learn. your money by coming on Fridays if you choose you can earn your educational specialist credential in mild moderate support knees or extensive support knees and then also this is a really cool thing you get a priority job interview status after you can play The Residency and last year but most of the residents that at were hired they found out in January that they had a job already for the next school year so they were finishing their couldn't courseware but they already knew they were high and so that was obviously like contingent on them completing the program but that was a really good benefit for them so there is three different like ways that people take to get their credential for special education CSUB The Residency is one of them and it's different than the traditional tracker the intern tracks I just wanted to highlight that so everybody understands like what the difference is the residency is like specific to green pill so you're going to be student teaching in Greece you're going to be priority job interview status for Greenfield you get a stipend to take it you like text we are an employee of the school district you get priority job interview status your classes are on site Greenfield the traditional track is not cohort-based so you don't really have that support of like people in all of your classes and you might be paired with a mentor or cooperating teacher for 6 to 10 weeks but that you don't start the school year with them you don't school year with them it's just like when they place you in a classroom that's great but you don't get paid you're just a student teacher your bear just trying to get your hours you usually most of the people in the traditional and the intern route take four or five nights a week in The Residency it's usually one day a week with the exception of one additional classes like Friday's on Zoom like six times has not every week in the residence you get to like be integrated into the school culture so you get to attend professional development you get to be like an employee of that school so you're just like really integrated into the school but in the traditional track that's not the case here. is there for the hours that you're there and in the intern track you're working full-time you're responsible for all this teaching you're responsible for all the case management and you have to complete your credentialing course work in a certain amount of time so like it's a really intense because not only are you going to school full-time but you're working full-time in The Residency you kind of get like 3 days a week where your there's a lot on you but you're with a mentor and you're not responsible for case management you're not responsible for your full license plans so like you still have that support to get everything done to have the experience of starting and ending a school year but without all of the weight of like being the Lead Teacher and I'll pick up from there I'm at the list of this look kind of like Kate said is is we generally do hire from a residency programs first which puts you on track to enter on the teaching pay scale and if you noticed I liked it at the bottom of any if you're assigned to special education I'm here in Greenfield you automatically get a $2,000 stipend every year I added onto your on to your spot on the pay scale so this is our current pay scale for this year and so you wouldn't start on this during your but this is where you would go after you got hired from your residency so it feels so silly because it's only October but we're talkin about next school year already but the reason is the prerequisites to get into the credentialing program and it's not just the residency it's all of the special ed credential program so first you have to have a bachelor's degree before you start the residency it's okay if you don't have one now you just have to have one before you start so it has to be completed by the time that you would start in August you need to have some sort of early field work experience there's a class that you can take which is that 4804 if you have experience in a classroom so you I have 50 hours total so like maybe you subbed maybe you are a paraprofessional those kinds of things like if you have experience you can sign off saying you have experience in there and then you don't need to take that class and so often times get that. It's kind of like a waiver the end I was a principal I would come to me and I would verify that that program assistant worked at my school site for more than 50 hours and so then they could wake up having to take yeah that's hey, in a lot of people do you have the experience to wave that there are also two foundational courses that are required so you need to have evsp 4270 which is called establishing foundations or preview play we offer to class called on people with disabilities in American Education if you took that class me will accept that as a prerequisite as well but I don't believe it's being offered any more and then 4100 is teaching linguistic Liang culturally diverse students and that is also a requirement for the credential program so it's not just the residency but it's all of the special ed credential program these horses are all offered in the spring I actually I think I might be on in a I'll talk about that in a second but you do if you haven't taken those classes and you need to take them take them in the spring but the deadline to apply for spring admission is November 1st so you just need to make sure you apply by November 1st so you can take the prerequisite courses and then be eligible for the residency in the fall you need to have a minimum GPA of 2.75 in the last 60 semester units or 90 quarter units but if your GPA is at least 2.5 you can submit for an exception exceptional admission application and Matt is just kind of like you talked about maybe why your GPA was a certain way and what supports you have in place moving forward to make sure that you'll be safe on the program and then you also will need to meet the basic skills requirement and the subject-matter competency requirement so that means that you either have to take the CBEST in the sea set or there's waivers now that are available through through in the state of California that certain coursework and certain degrees can meet those requirements so they're there are links I hope they work there are links in the slides yes but you to the website that explain the all those waivers but if you have questions about that I also I maybe 1:30 coordinator at the SUV so you can ask me and I'm happy to answer all of them so in order to get into the residency to apply for The Residency first you have to be accepted into the special accidental program but don't like wait to tell me that you're interested because it just tell me you're interested you email me and then technically that's your application but you would have to be accepted into the special ed credential program before you can be accepted into the residency you'll also need a valid substitute credentials for that 4 by the time sorry it has valid for the whole year of the residency so if you have one now but it'll expire like in December make sure you renew it so that it's good to go email me if you're interested in participating cuz then we'll just keep in touch about your application and make sure you have prerequisites and everything in place and then in the spring February 1st is going to be the application deadline for the special ed program and for The Residency specifically so you can apply by February 1st and you would interview with the special ed program and then you'd interview with the residency and then you'd be good to go in on the next but we would talk you all the way through it and were available to help with the process and then after that then apply it on the district website so these are the days I already said but if you have to take the prerequisites this is a really really important date if you have to take the prerequisites and you haven't already even if you have to take one of them or whatever you have to apply to CSUB by November 1st because that's going to make you eligible to take those in the spring and unfortunately we don't offer them in the summer I'm just because there's not enough people that need to take them over. this time and then you can apply to the special education program at CSUB by February 1st in the spring but if you email me and let me know you're interested I'll like remind you of all these things it's going to be lovely like why is he calling me again oh sorry oh you're fine I actually wasn't talk about financially so if you go to the check okay so not only do you get the stipend but there are a lot opportunities for grins and for scholarships for people especially that want to go into the field of special education these are just a couple of them one of our residents this year got a $5,000 PSE residency scholarship I'm so big opportunities available the biggest thing I will say is if you're someone that's interested in doing this next year and you think you want some scholarships or grants apply for the FAFSA like as soon as you can because basically is first time first serve in terms of any financial aid and even if you're not sure if you want to do this program I ain't sure is you just apply for the faster because it doesn't matter like you can just not take it if you decide not to go to school or not to do the program but it you more eligible for lots of the grants that are available in the spring and I believe the deadline for FAFSA like for fall is like the priority deadline is March 1st so just make sure if I say that if you think you might want some grants or scholarships that they can apply for that right after New Year right in January and you can apply for it much later to like it doesn't have to be the March 1st deadline but the thing is a ton of people in the state of Hawaii before you then they're going to get the funding before you do so that's why we say like if you know that you're interested apply just because then it's done and you don't have to worry about it later and so if you want more information here are some links that you can click on or you can always email Kate or I and we will give you any information or try to answer any questions you have or find out the answers for you and I there is a QR code on it the screen to so that will take you to I believe that takes you to the CSUB residency page correct 80 K and so are there any questions out there I have some so can we apply to the residency while still doing our free breakfast it has died how do we calculate your GPA for that sticks unit area Tennessee SUV that's a good question the person I normally would refer you to do just retired like last night you know if you have a specific question like that email me and I'll figure out who we need to talk to you now and then I'll get you in touch with maybe the director of the program is the best person to talk to but if you just let me know then I will figure out who's who the person is now okay I'm sorry I'm in process of getting my substitute teaching actually so that's something I'm working on now and then I know know I know I need to free breakfast at my undergraduate wasn't child adolescent family studies if I don't have any you know classes that are worth for the special education department so I didn't take pre-workout that for sure with financial aid can I apply for financial aid for the fall semester at spring semester for January I was at work oh yeah you can even if I I guess but I thought that is real and covers like a x amount of you so in terms of financial aid I'm going to refer you to talk to the financial aid department just because I don't know all the ins and outs and I don't want to advise you incorrectly but I do you think you can like as long as apply as long as you're admitted into the university you can always apply for until the day and just see what they offer and I know that they'll always do their best to get you the best package. yeah well I think you might be nice all the questions I have for now and if we're lucky to always email you or Renee there absolutely SUV specific questions though I would encourage you to talk to Kate if they're actually technical questions about the residency and what we do here at Greenville that you can contact either one of us but she does all the knowledge of the SUV birthday you can always just put both of us email whoever knows the answer will respond I'm just going through like a career thing I'm just like Tiffany and we'll know I just like one of those thing yeah and honestly like if you want talk about it more offline and just have like a private conversation we're happy to do that too thank you thank you question. So I graduate in May or I think was emailing you Kate a while back I might be able to place to this program now so you have to wait until after November 1st oh no it's telling me my internet okay and my still frozen now you're good now and it's unstable so so you can apply until after the spring deadline and just because otherwise if you apply too early you'll get admitted to early and then you have to apply again so wait till afternoon November 1st I would wait till after her first and even then I'm there might be stuff on the website and let me look up and tell you specifically I just don't want you to apply too early and then we have to pay the admission fee for the application fee again I want to do that then right away what you know you let you know that we're interested in The Residency program thank you okay well if there aren't any more questions we will go ahead and end the session by want to thank everybody for coming and like we said feel free to reach out to us if another question comes up okay see you guys thank you so much I'm grieving you think you
